Points deductions are set to remain in the Premier League despite suggestions of an NBA-style “luxury tax”.
Premier League clubs are attending their latest shareholders meeting today (10 April) and the future of squad cost controls is set to be on the agenda.
Sky Sports News have reported that significant points deductions are likely to remain as the primary punishment for clubs that break Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) despite proposals to replace points deductions with fines.
The proposed luxury tax system would see clubs that breach financial regulations fined and then the money shared out between teams who complied with the rules.
The discussion about the Premier League’s PSR follows points deductions for Everton and Nottingham Forest that have been met with backlash from supporters.
The news that points deductions are set to remain in the Premier League has been met with mixed reactions on X.
Points deduction penalties are the only thing that make sense

Why fine them when money is the problem? Even the points deductions are so weak. It should be automatic relegation. All the teams that have done this gain much more than they lose. And until that’s rectified the prem won’t be a fair platform.

There won’t be a vote on the issue at today’s shareholders meeting but the Premier League want to update the system by the summer ahead of the 2024/2025 season that kicks off on 17 August 2024.
