Football matches being called off due to extreme weather other than frozen pitches has been increasing across Merseyside and the country in recent years.

Climate change brings with it a host of problems for the grassroots game, with waterlogged pitches being a big problem.

Around a third of grassroots pitches are already losing six weeks to two months of the year from flooding due to severe weather, with the Met Office attributing some of the heavy rainfall to the consequences of climate change.

Mersey Sport Live’s Jamie Hudson spoke to BBC Climate Editor Justin Rowlatt and a coach who has been involved in grassroots football for over 21 years.
