On Monday 8 October 2015, Liverpool announced the appointment of Jurgen Klopp from Borussia Dortmund. The rest, as they say, is history.

The charismatic German has transformed the club, on and off the pitch, and has become one of the most successful managers in Anfield history.

MerseySportLive takes a look at his greatest matches to mark his eight-year tenure.

  • Liverpool v Barcelona 4-0 2019

Arguably the greatest Champions League comeback of all time. Liverpool had lost 3-0 at the Camp Nou in the first leg and faced a near impossible task against a Leo Messi led Barcelona side. An inspired Anfield performance saw them overturn the deficit with both Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi scoring a brace. The Belgian striker cemented his name in Liverpool folklore, finishing off Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick corner to complete the comeback.

  • Liverpool v Manchester United 7-0 2023

Losing to a rival is bad enough but beating them by seven goals is the epitome of embarrassment. Klopp led his side to a memorable result, inflicting Manchester United’s biggest loss in 90 years. Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah each scored twice, with Roberto Firmino scoring the seventh to complete a ruthless performance.

  • Liverpool v Tottenham 2-0 2019

After heartbreak in the Champions League final the season before to Real Madrid, Klopp won his first trophy as a manager since 2012 and Liverpool’s sixth Champions League. An assured performance by the Reds brushed Tottenham Hotspur aside with goals from the ever-present  Salah and Origi capping off a legendary result in the club’s history.

  • Liverpool v Dortmund 4-3 2016

Another great European comeback at Anfield saw Liverpool come from 3-1 down with a last-minute winner from an unlikely goalscorer in Dejan Lovren to progress to the Europa League semi-final. An exhilarating game in Klopp’s early years at the club saw goals from Origi, Philippe Coutinho and Mamadou Sakho sending Anfield into pandemonium.

  • Liverpool v Manchester City 3-1 2019

In the 2018/19 season, Klopp led his side to a 97-point campaign yet miraculously finished second and were out for revenge on arch-rivals Manchester City. With goals from Fabinho, Sadio Mane and Salah, Liverpool established an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League. They were a formidable force throughout the season, winning the title by 18 points.

  • Liverpool v Everton 1-0 2018

One of Jurgen Klopp’s crazier moments came as he raced on to the pitch and jumped into Allison’s outstretched arms after Origi, a common feature in this list, scored a 96th minute winner in the Merseyside Derby. The cult hero capitalised on Jordan Pickford’s mistake, letting the ball hit the bar twice before it bounced back into his path to head in to an empty net in front of The Kop. The German’s crazy celebrations are one of the reasons he is so adored by the Reds.

  • Liverpool v Chelsea 5-3 2020

The significance of the result is less important as to what followed the full-time whistle – Liverpool lifting the Premier league trophy for the first time in 30 years. The win not only meant lifting the title, but also made it three full unbeaten Premier League seasons at Anfield. The special team Klopp had built, finally achieved the prize that all Liverpool fans were dreaming of.

  • Norwich v Liverpool 4-5 2016

Klopp racing down the touchline and catching a leaping Adam Lallana after he scored a 95th minute winner to win a crazy back and forth match at Carrow Road will always be an iconic image in Liverpool fans’ minds. As the German manager began to build his title winning sides, his early years were full of high scoring, entertaining matches, a trait that has stayed with his Liverpool team throughout his spell at Anfield.
