Former Liverpool player Javier Mascherano has agreed to become Inter Miami’s new head coach, according to reports.
This comes after previous boss, Gerardo Martino, left his position for personal reasons, despite still having a year left on his deal.
Mascherano made 91 appearances for Liverpool between 2007 and 2010 and formed part of a deadly midfield trio that included Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso. He will re-unite with former Liverpool and Barcelona star, Luis Suarez, as well as former team mates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
The Argentine’s managerial experience includes being the Argentina under-20s manager, as well as coaching Argentina at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Inter Miami boasted their best ever regular season finish, winning the 2024 Supports Shield, and set a record for most points recorded in a single season with 74 points.
Despite success in the regular season, Inter Miami struggled in the Leagues Cup, being knocked out by Columbus Crew in the round of 16, losing to Monterrey in the Concacaf Champions League. Also, in one of the biggest upsets in MLS history, Messi’s side were eliminated in the first round of the MLS playoffs, losing to Atlanta United FC.
As well as the regular 34-match MLS season, Mascherano will also have to contend with competing in the newly formed Club World Cup, which kicks off in June.
