Steven Gerrard is set to make his managerial return to Rangers after an 18 month stint as head coach of Saudi Pro League team Al-Ettifaq.

The Liverpool legend is due to have talks with the Rangers hierarchy after the Scottish team parted ways with former manager Russell Martin after a calamitous 123-day reign.

Martin only won five games in his 17 game run, leaving him as the shortest serving Rangers boss in 153 years.

Gerrard was first appointed as Rangers head coach in 2018, with his time in charge spanning three seasons and 192 matches, winning 124, with an average points per match of 2.15.

The former head coach helped the ‘Gers to their 55th Scottish Premier League title in 2021, as his side went unbeaten in 38 matches, earning 102 points whilst only conceding an astonishing 13 goals in the campaign.

Gerrard left ‘The Teddy Bears’ in November 2021, after a dispute with the board over a lack of funding, amongst other behind closed-door reasons.

Former Rangers chairman, Dave King said: “Steven was absolutely kicked out. I have no doubts about that. Steven did not want to leave at that point in time. He would have left, but not then.

“It’s absolutely true that we went backwards from that point. It was the ethos, the standards, everything about the club that Steven instilled. Then we started to go down from there.”

Gerrard joined Premier League side Aston Villa in November 202 before being shown the door after only 11 months in charge.

Gerrard’s run at Villa was disappointing, winning 13 out of 40 matches, garnering an average of 1.18 points per game.

The Scouser then joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in July 2023, however his time there was nothing short of below average. His side amassed 19 wins in 55 matches, with an average of 1.33 points per game.

‘Stevie G’ has been out of a job since January and has since become a grandfather. However, he claims that he has ‘unfinished business’ in his managerial career and is now tipped for a special return to Ibrox.
