Tranmere Midfielder Chris Merrie admits The Lillywhites may be struggling for consistency but the chopping and changing of the team due to injuries has hardly helped.

“There are a few bad injuries. All teams get them, but unfortunately for us, it’s long-term injuries to key players at the moment.”

“If you’re chopping and changing a lot, it is tough.”

Tranmere have several key players side lined including Luke Norris, Saidou Khan, and Regan Hendry, with skipper Tom Davies also a doubt.

A disappointing 2-2 draw in midweek against lowly Morecambe has only added to the importance of Saturday’s game against Chesterfield for Nigel Adkins’ side. Connor Jennings 75th minute strike earned a lack lustre point.

Merrie told Mersey Sport Live, “We need to find that consistency. If we take our chances like we did the other night, that will help us.”

Merrie, who has started the last two games, feels the Rovers need to improve all over the pitch. “It’s also the goals we are conceding at the moment. The first one was a tough one, but little things are going against us at the minute, so hopefully that will change. It shows there is character in this team, but we shouldn’t be going behind twice.”

Tranmere sit 21st in the table, only four points above Carlisle, who are bottom.

Merrie insists Tranmere are not looking over their shoulders. “I don’t think we can concentrate on the table. We aren’t in a good position, everyone knows that, but I think we just have to go to Chesterfield and believe we can win.”

Chesterfield will be a tough test where they will be looking to bolster their play-off hopes, especially after defeat at fellow promotion hopefuls MK Dons. Merrie believes the game will be a tough match-up for Tranmere but is confident they can take all three points.

“Obviously, they did really well last season, and we know they have some really good players, so it should be a tough game, but we’re all looking forward to it.”

“We need to take on Chesterfield, go there, and believe we can win, and take it from there.”
