Arsenal Women’s made history with a staggering 11-1 victory over Bristol City on Sunday.

The defending champions continued to be dominant as they smashed the previous record by two.

The win that put Arsenal top of the league was the biggest since Liverpool beat Doncaster Belles 9-0 in 2013.

Netherlands international Vivianne Miedema set a new record for individual performance as she netted six and created four. The previous individual best was three goals and two assists, set by Miedema herself in a 5-0 win over Liverpool in 2018.

How it happened

Starting the game third in the league the Gunners displayed one of the most dominating performances against a lacklustre Bristol.

The North London team had 32 attempts on goal, with 17 on target and on average created a chance every three minutes.

Arsenal started early, with Evans and Williamson scoring headers from Miedema crosses inside 10. The striker and Ballon D’or shortlister then scored four in a row between the 15th and 51st minute to make it 6-0. Captain Jordan Nobbs then turned home another Miedema cross to make it 7-0. A second goal for Evans and a fifth for Miedema made it 9-0 on the hour mark.

She secured her double hat-trick five minutes later when she blasted it near post to take her team into double figures. The final goal of the onslaught came from substitute Emma Mitchell.

It was not all gloom for Bristol as they stole the clean sheet from under the Gunners feet. A poor pass from the keeper allowed Bristol’s striker to get the ball in the box leading to a penalty. Having originally stopped the spot kick, Zinsberger, could only look on as the rebound was fired home.

Arsenal, now top of the league, will face Reading next week, whilst 11th place Bristol face Birmingham.
