Mohamed Salah is reported to be one of three senior players included in Egypt’s Olympic squad for the tournament in Tokyo later this year.
However, it’s believed there has been no contact between Shawky Gharib, the national team’s U23 coach, and Liverpool.
The Echo reported that Jurgen Klopp is concerned about letting his star forward represent his country at the Olympics.
Speaking to Egyptian TV, Ahram, Gharib confirmed Salah will be part of the preliminary squad ahead of talks with Liverpool FC.
He said: “Egypt U23s preliminary squad will be led by Mohamed Salah and Mohamed El-Shennawi alongside another goalkeeper.
“Salah is currently one of the most important players in the world and it’s normal to call him for Egypt.
“We Will start official talks with Liverpool after the international break.”
Klopp’s reluctance to let his top scorer leave for the Olympics is understandable given this season’s mounting injury crisis.
His participation in Tokyo would mean his pre-season is cut short.
Liverpool have been ravaged by injuries to many first team players this season, including Virgil Van Dijk, Alisson, Joel Matip, Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez.
Klopp will not want to take any risks with Salah. Jordan Henderson is the latest big name on the injury list.
Reports suggest Salah will make the final decision on whether he takes part with his national side this summer. Talks will take place later this month.
The tournament will take place in Tokyo between July 23 and August 8.
