Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp warned that it is only half-time despite his side’s 2-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League last 16.

Goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah secured another famous victory late at the San Siro.

Klopp acknowledged that Inter were a tough team to play and admitted that progression is not a foregone conclusion.

“It’s half time, nothing else, it will be a tricky one and we have to be ready for that,” he said.

Despite his side not having a shot-on-target until the 75th minute, the German was pleased with the performance.

“It was an incredibly physical game so we had to find a way.”

Van Dijk back to his formidable best

Virgil Van Dijk completed three interceptions, made seven clearances and won 5/7 aerial duels.

He constantly frustrated Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez, his recovery pace and strength proved crucial when Inter thought they had breached the Reds high-line.

The Dutchman and his partner Ibrahima Konate restricted the home team to zero shots on target.

Klopp was impressed with his defence.

“We defended really well, the way you have to defend. You have to defend with passion, organisation helps as well.”

From Championship to Champions League

It was a memorable night for Harvey Elliott, who became the youngest player to start a European Cup match for the Reds (18y 318d).

“The reason Harvey played was because we knew which spaces we had to play and it’s usually naturally his area,” he said.

“He had good moments but we all know he can play much better.”

Elliott will be hungry to add to his first 59 Champions League minutes in the near future.

Klopp’s substitutes star in San Siro

Elliott, Fabinho and Sadio Mane were replaced on the hour by Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Luis Diaz.

“The boys came on and had a proper impact, all three were really really good.”

“Bobby scored and from there we controlled the game,” Klopp said.

Klopp’s Jota worry

Roberto Firmino replaced Diogo Jota at half-time.

The Portuguese could have carried on, however Klopp was not willing to risk aggravating his swollen ankle.

He added that it is “not a good sign, but we will check it as early as possible tomorrow”.
