Tranmere have appointed Nigel Adkins as permanent manager on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Adkins has filled in on an interim basis following the dismissal of Ian Dawes and will be tasked with helping Rovers climb out of the relegation zone. The Wirral club sit 23rd in League Two having lost 12 of their first 16 games this season.

Adkins has had successful tenures at numerous EFL clubs including promotion with Southampton from League 1 to the Premier League.

Adkins acknowledged the job had not previously been on his radar as he was based down in Hampshire.

He was appointed as Technical Director of the club in the summer and has achieved two wins from his nine league games in charge.

The new boss admitted his team must stick together and focus to begin their improvement.

They can hope to climb up the table in their next two League games as they face teams around them near the bottom of the table.

First up for Adkins is an FA Cup first round tie against League One Stevenage.
