Liverpool stunned Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield last night for their first-ever Women’s Super League victory at the ground.
Manchester United dominated the first half of play until the 42nd minute.
Olivia Smith slipped past United’s defence on the right flank and scored a stunning solo goal for Liverpool.
Fuka Nagano was able to double Liverpool’s lead before halftime with a first-time finish off a cross from Sam Kerr.
United, who had won seven straight league games, struggled to recover while Liverpool continued to carry momentum in the second half.
Smith added a third goal for Liverpool from the penalty spot in the 67th minute when WSL debutant Alejandra Bernabe was fouled in the box by Jayde Riviere.
Maya Le Tissier managed to snag a consolation goal for United in the 89th minute.
The victory was not only Liverpool’s first WSL win at Anfield but also their first time winning at the stadium since 1999.
Liverpool Interim Manager Amber Whiteley said: “So happy for the fans. They’ve been waiting for [this win].
“We want to play football that the fans can get behind and be proud of. I think we have done that tonight.”
Amber Whiteley took over the team in late February when Matt Beard departed from the club.
Since then, she has coached the team to two WSL victories and a surprise upset over Arsenal in the FA Cup to reach the semi-finals.
Oliva Smith said that Whiteley has been great for the team, helping them be better prepared and gain confidence.
Smith said: “We’ve just had a massive boost in confidence. That goes with her just giving us more clarity on our roles, switching the formation, allowing us to be ourselves, and bringing out our individual qualities.”
Liverpool’s next match is at the Emirates against Arsenal on March 22nd. Kick-off is at 17:30.
