Liverpool will aim to pick up their first points of their WSL season when they face newly promoted London City Lionesses on Sunday.

The Reds are currently second bottom of the WSL, ahead of West Ham on goal difference.

Ahead of making the trip to Cooperjax Community Stadium, manager Gareth Taylor emphasised his annoyance with the slow start to the season.

“There’s disappointment, there really is,” said Taylor.

“I think disappointment is fine but knowing we’re moving in the right direction with the games that have come so far, we feel we should have got more.”

Taylor’s side have only scored one goal so far this WSL campaign, coming in a humiliating 4-1 home defeat to Merseyside rivals Everton.

Taylor said: “Shoot more has been the message. Take your moments, take your opportunities, unless you’re in a position where there’s a more favourable option.”

After defeats at the hands of Leicester and Manchester United, as well as the loss in the Merseyside Derby, Liverpool will look to kick start their season against WSL newcomers London City Lionesses.

London City, managed by Jocelyn Prêcheur, have had a shaky start themselves – only winning one of their opening four, but Taylor emphasised the need to respect this weekend’s opponents.

“They’re not here just to make up the numbers, you can see that they’re making statements of intent with each signing that they’re bringing to the club.

“I like their outlook, I like their attitude, they have the players able to do it, I think it’s a case of new ideas and new ways of working.”

On a results only basis, Liverpool’s start to the season appears dire but there has been plenty of good moments that showcase positive signs, something that Taylor highlights.

“We had quite a few opportunities against Everton, where we got into the box on numerous occasions.

“I think in the Leicester game we didn’t carve out enough good opportunities but still had some half chances that we didn’t take.

“Then obviously against United we were frustrated in our first half performance, but we were improved in the second period without actually getting our goals.”

London City come into this game on the back of a heavy 4-1 defeat at the hands of title-chasing Arsenal.

Prêcheur’s team have shipped 14 goals in only four games, a league high (joint with West Ham) and will look to sharpen up at the back against a Liverpool team who have struggled to find the net.

Having only accumulated an xG of 2.8 across three games, Taylor’s side will be aiming to provide a kick-start on Sunday to what has been a difficult campaign thus far.
