A Cheshire man has hailed exercise as the key to him regaining his health as National Cholesterol  Awareness month draws to a close.

Martin Fletcher was in a constant state of physical struggle and low self esteem. Trying multiple different methods to combat his weight, it was through exercise that Martin was able to achieve his goal.

He said: “I had arthritis in both feet, I had damaged Achilles in both feet, I was supposed to walk with a limp permanently.”

October is National Cholesterol Month. The UK-wide event is run by Heart UK to spread awareness around high cholesterol and the health implications it brings.

To keep people healthy and aware of their cholesterol the British Heart Foundation are offering people a free six-week email guide to help people lower their cholesterol.

Though it is mostly linked with poor diets and lack of exercise, having high cholesterol can be genetic.

Diets that aren’t seen as “unhealthy” can contribute such as high-fat, low-carb diets like the keto diet which endurance athletes will use to better their performance.

Cholesterol is a major risk factor when it comes heart disease and other major health issues such as obesity.

Matin started his journey back in 2016, he was obese weighing at near 140kg.

The weight he put on curved his spine, gave him high blood pressure as well as high cholesterol.

Martin’s journey was a long one and he found it difficult to stick to his weight loss, and he said his state of mind was key to his success.

“Every single day is a battel for me. It was never going to happen with the mentality that I had,” he said.

“I wasn’t willing to stop this time, and that was it.”
