Arne Slot believes the “future looks very bright” for his Liverpool team, despite their 4-0 aggregate loss to PSG in the UEFA Champions League quarter final.
Liverpool was defeated 4-0 on aggregate, ending their final hopes of silverware for the 2025/26 season.
Looking to the future
The Reds failed to overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit on a rainy night at Anfield. However, head coach Arne Slot has praised the potential which his side showed on the night.
Slot said: “The future looks very bright for this team, for this club.
“We have shown that we can compete with the champions of Europe, in our stadium… not many teams can be dominant against Paris Saint Germain and generate as many chances as we did.”
Slot credits Ousmane Dembele impact
The reds piled the pressure onto the Parisians in the second half. However, an Ousmane Dembele brace was enough to book a place in the semi-final for PSG.
Dembele scored against Liverpool in the round of 16 stage of last year’s competition. The Frenchman has now scored in two successive games at Anfield.
Slot gave credit to Dembele for his opening goal in this fixture.
“Sometimes, you have to give credit to this particular player, Ousmane Dembele, who finished that chance off really well.”
Hugo Ekitike injury concern
This match saw new injury concerns develop for Liverpool. Hugo Ekitike appeared to be in a lot of distress and had to be stretchered off.
Slot did not give a detailed update on the forward’s condition
He said: “It looks really bad, but it’s difficult for me to say how bad. Tomorrow we will investigate further.
“It does not look good. That is clear.”
Slot on VAR penalty decision
Slot was not shocked that the decision to award Liverpool a penalty was overturned after a VAR review.
“Last week, we had too much luck, and we ran out of luck today.
“This has happened to us multiple times this season.”
Liverpool’s next fixture is away to Merseyside rivals Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday 19th April.
