A dramatic encounter at Prenton Park saw Tranmere orchestrate a second half comeback to beat Newport 2-1 with a last minute Connor Jennings goal.
The game featured a rollercoaster of emotions, with Will Evans opening the scoring for the visitors, only for Kieron Morris to draw Tranmere level before Jennings turned the tide in Tranmere’s favour to end Newport’s four-game winning streak over them.
Rovers boss Nigel Adkins will be delighted to take all three points with his side now going into a busy Christmas period. The victory means they move further away from the relegation zone.
The first chance came after four minutes following a bright spell from Tranmere. The in form Rob Apter broke down the right and his cross found Jennings who headed wide, sending an early warning for Graham Coughlan’s side.
Only minutes later and Morris’ ball flashed straight across the face of goal but no one could direct it into the back of the net.
Out of nowhere, striker Omar Bogle broke down the right-hand side to cut inside and forced Luke McGee into a strong save with the follow-up by Evans was fired wide.
A long freekick against the run of play on 22 minutes found the ever so-dangerous Evans who from 12 yards out rifled into the top left-hand corner to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
A huge penalty appeal from Tranmere on the stroke of halftime was waved away by referee Seb Stockbridge. Midfielder Bryn Morris was subsequently shown the first yellow card of the game for what was adjudged to be a dive.
After a bright spell of play after the break saw Tranmere break down the left for Connor Wood to find Morris on the penalty spot whose shot deflected past Townsend to make it level on 57 minutes.
With a minute of normal time remaining Dennis curled an effort off the post that landed at the feet of Jennings who tapped in at the back post to steal the points.
