“I don’t see why we can’t do something good this season.” These were the words of Tranmere Rovers’ striker Morgan Ferrier as he claims that his side can have a great season, despite sitting three points above the bottom three.
Ferrier joined the Rovers in the summer from Walsall and netted his first goal since returning from injury in the dramatic win against Wycombe in the FA Cup replay on Wednesday night but has only featured 8 times for the Rovers so far, scoring 3 goals.
“As a striker, I think as long as you are getting the chances that’s the main thing,” the former Arsenal man said.
“I think when you are not getting chances and you are going through games where you are missing chances and having no involvement it’s difficult.
“I’m a player who has a lot of self-belief, so as long as I am fit and keep myself fit and I do what the gaffer asks me to do.
“Naturally, there is going to be some games that he needs certain things from me that might not be what I want to do, but I have to work for the team and I feel like the harder you work the luckier you get, so if I carry on working hard I feel I will get my rewards.”
Ferrier acknowledges that Fleetwood will be a tough test on Saturday afternoon but was keen to stress that Tranmere have plenty of quality themselves.
“It’s been a hard season because we have had a lot of injuries and there have been disruptive things in terms of sending offs and stuff like that, so I don’t feel we have ever really had the chance to field everyone at the same time.
“It is Mid-November coming into December and I feel in a way we don’t know our best team because we haven’t had everyone available.
“If you look at the quality we have around, as I said, Ridehalgh’s out, you’ve got Cam (Cameron-Borthwick-Jackson) who comes in whose played for Manchester United, that is an unreal boost.
“As a player you know if you are not playing to the best of your ability, there are people who can come in who are as good as you if not better, so every day you have to have the mindset to work hard.
“I feel over the course of the season if we can keep everyone fit and just keep everyone hungry then I don’t see why we can’t do something good this season”
The Christmas period is undoubtedly the toughest period of the footballing calendar. However, the 25-year-old looks at it as an opportunity to push up the league table.
“I had a look at the table for the first time in a while during the week and I feel we are kind of at a crossroads, we can kind of go either way.
“We are 10 points off the pack pushing for playoffs and only a few points off being in the bottom three, so I feel like it’s come at a good time were we have everyone or near enough everyone fit.
“Over the Christmas period, there are so many games so if you pick up a few wins you never know where you will find yourself.
“What the gaffer hammers home to us is that we have got to take every game as it comes and if you do that and have that mindset you never know where you will end up.”
Tranmere face Fleetwood at 3pm on Saturday afternoon and, if given the chance Ferrier will be hoping that he can inspire them to a crucial 3 points.
