Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk insists they do not need extra motivation for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final after their Champions League loss against Paris Saint-Germain.

Van Dijk said: “No, we don’t need added motivation to be honest. Ten more games and we can win the Premier League. We can win the Carabao Cup this Sunday.”

“So I think if we need any extra motivation, then I think you’re in the wrong business.”

Liverpool lost the round-of-16 match up 4-1 on penalties after drawing 1-1 with PSG on aggregate.

Liverpool Manager Arne Slot said: “I hope and think that every fan around the world was hoping that this game just kept on going, just wouldn’t stop because it was incredible.

“[PSG] in the end won, and for us it’s so so unlucky that if you are number one in the league table that you then face Paris Saint-Germain, which is one of the best teams in Europe.”

Even after the heart-breaking defeat, Slot remains confident in the team’s morale heading into the game on Sunday.

Slot said: “Now the good thing is that we play a final on Sunday, so mentally, that’s probably the best you can ask for because this is what we are playing football for, to play finals.”

In terms of rebounding from this game, Van Dijk said: “We have to feel the disappointment tonight, but from tomorrow starts the recovery, and be ready for a good one.”

“If we bring this intensity with our fans to Wembley on Sunday, then I’m positive. That’s what I’m always going to be the way. I’m really looking forward to being out there again.”

Liverpool are playing Newcastle on Sunday in the Carabao Cup final. They last met in the Premier League in February, where Liverpool won 2-0

The final at Wembley kicks off at 16:30.
