Tommy Fleetwood starts the WGC- Dell Match play today against J.T Poston at the Austin Country Club in Texas.

Match play is a different format from the standard stroke play in golf with Fleetwood due to start his match at 7:39 pm UK time.

Match play is a format where a player plays directly against an opponent in a head-to-head match. One player wins a hole by completing it in the fewest number of strokes and wins a match when they are winning by more holes that remain to be played.

Fleetwood has a good record in match play events, winning 48% of his matches played and contributing six and a half points at the Ryder Cup for Team Europe.

The tournament starts in a round-robin group format. Groups of four play each other once with the player finishing top and advancing to the next round.

Last year, Fleetwood finished fourth place in group five after defeats to fellow Englishmen Ian Poulter and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Fleetwood did defeat last year’s champion Scottie Scheffler who still finished top of the group.

This year, Fleetwood is in a group consisting of Maverick McNealy, Sungjae Im and J.T Poston.

World number one Scottie Scheffler will be looking to join Tiger Woods as the only player to win successive WGC- Dell Match play championships.

Whilst Fleetwood, despite coming close last week at the Valspar Championship, will be looking for his first win on the PGA Tour.

You can watch the WGC- Dell Match play throughout the week live on Sky Sports.
