Andy Crosby has emphasised the importance of building momentum after securing a first league win since August last weekend.
Tranmere beat Bristol Rovers 4-1 after going on a seven-match winless streak. And now Crosby wants to capitalise on an impressive performance as Chesterfield arrive at Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon.
Crosby sent a clear message to his players after a stuttering start to the season that has included the team being booed off last time out at Prenton Park following a 2-0 defeat to Barnet.
He told Mersey Sport Live: “The week after the Barnet game was a long week, we spoke about a lot of things. We did a lot of work on the training pitch and there was a long time between the Barnet game finishing and the Bristol Rovers game starting.
“But it was a big turnaround, and the message this week has been about momentum and trying to build it and trying to build on the back of the performance last week.”
Tranmere have been consistent scorers this season, scoring more goals than league leaders, Walsall and seventh overall in the league.
Crosby is pleased with the improvement but still faces challenges in keeping goals out. They have scored 20 goals and conceded 18 this campaign.
He said: “We were consistent scorers at the back end of last season as well. We’ve only failed to score in two games out of the 12.
“But we’ve also conceded, averaging one and a half goals a game. So, it’s about finding that balance between being good, both with and without the ball and the majority of our goals have come away from home so we have to try and fix that problem.”
Injuries are adding to the challenge the Tranmere boss faces with consistency amongst the starting line up being an issue. Luke McGee, Lee O’Connor and Jason Lowe are among those currently sidelined through injury.
He said: “I’m sick of talking about [injuries]. It has been a real drain on us. I would say now for a couple of months where we seem to be picking up so many things. It’s not come to an end, but I do know that the players who go out there tomorrow are determined to build on last week.”
The Super Whites have now picked up more points and wins on the road than they have at home, collecting eight points through two wins and two draws compared to one win, three draws at home.
However, Rovers will be looking to change that and get a result against Chesterfield.
Crosby said: “We’re expecting a challenging game tomorrow like any other game in League Two, with different things that you have to try and meet within the game.
“We have to build that momentum now at home and give our supporters something to get behind, certainly early in the game and give them some encouragement and trying to play the game in the final third.”
