With the international break in full flow, Mersey Sport Live looks at some of the best English players to play for either Liverpool or Everton.

Steven Gerrard

Making his debut for the Three Lions aged 20, Gerrard made 114 appearances, captained the side 38 times and scored 21 goals.

The legendary Scouser played across three European competitions in 2000, 2004 and 2012 where he was named in the team of the tournament.

He also took part in three World Cups in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

Aged just 21, Gerrard scored his first goal for England in a World Cup qualifying match against Germany.

The Whiston midfielder made his final appearance for his country in a World Cup group stage match against Costa Rica.

Overall, an impressive international record, but England massively underperformed in this period considering the quality they had in the squad.

Jordan Pickford

With 81 caps under his belt, the Everton shot stopper made his debut against Germany in a friendly in 2017 where he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.

Eight years later, he is still being selected for England, by Thomas Tuchel, so it is likely he will achieve many more caps in the future.

Pickford has become one of the most reliable keepers when it comes to penalty shootouts after saving spot kicks in victories over Colombia in the 2018 World Cup, Switzerland in the 2019 Nations League and against Switzerland again in the 2024 European Championships.

Jordan Henderson

Between his debut against France in a friendly in 2010, and his last cap against Serbia in 2025, the former Liverpool midfielder has obtained 88 caps for the Three Lions.

His pivotal role in turning around Liverpool’s fortunes by aiding them to Premier League and Champions League glory have earned him many caps for his national side.

In the 15-year period he’s played for England, he has scored three times and featured in three World Cup’s and could feature in four if he is selected by Tuchel in the summer of 2026.

Bringing the experience of the Premier League winner will certainly be on the German manager’s mind when it comes to selecting his squad next year.

Leighton Baines

The fullback from Kirkby made his debut for England aged 25 against Egypt in a friendly in 2010 and made his final appearance against Lithuania in a European Championship qualifier in 2015.

His one and only goal for the Three Lions came against Moldova in a World Cup qualifier in 2012.

Known for his immense technical ability, it is a shock that Baines only made 30 caps for England but that also says a lot about how good his competition for the left back spot was.

Michael Owen

Making his debut against Chile aged just 18, Owen became one of England’s best young players and achieved 89 caps before he was hampered with injury.

His first of 40 goals was scored against Morocco in 1998 which was the beginning of a promising international career for the lad from Chester.

Owen’s last appearance came in 2008 in a friendly against France ending a decade long career for the Three Lions.

Despite his controversial transfer to Manchester United, Owen is still seen as one of the most devasting strikers Liverpool have had on their books but was just held back by injuries which stopped him from being an unstoppable force.

In conclusion, both Liverpool and Everton have had some unbelievably talented English players who could have pushed England towards international glory.

With both clubs consistently producing young English talent like Trent Alexander Arnold and Leighton Baines, it’ll be no surprise if either club produce another England legend in the near future.
