Every Friday morning, LJMU’s sports building bursts to life with the Yes, We See You project, a feel good session making sure adults with learning disabilities are seen, heard and valued.

The project was launched by Lecturer in Education Janette Porter after Mencap’s national Do You See Me? campaign exposed how many adults across the country felt invisible.

Adults with learning disabilities often face barriers to higher education, from inaccessible teaching to low expectations and stigma.

The project was created to give Mencap members a genuine experience of university life.

Last year, 44 Mencap members graduated after 35 hours of teaching that built skills, confidence, and enduring friendships.

Teaching ranges from weekly sports sessions and gym activities but also more creative work such as writing, relationship education and media literacy.

Following its success, the project secured another round of funding and will continue into the next academic year.

LJMU, in partnership with Mencap, is setting a bold precedent for what a truly inclusive university can look like.
