Vauxhall Motors made it 17 goals in six matches by demolishing Darlaston Town 5-0 on Saturday to keep pressure on Northern Premier League West Division leaders Lower Breck.

It could have been so different when a calamitous start for the Motors saw Wade Rutherford bring down Kieran Cook less than a minute into the match.

The man brought down then confidently stepped up to the spot kick but his low effort was  denied by the hosts’ goalkeeper Reece Trueman.

No more than a minute later Vauxhall had found the games’ opener.

The penalty was parried for a corner. Danny Holmes’ side dealt with it well and swiftly launched a counter attack, spearheaded by Connor Harwood.

He slipped in last season’s star Nick Rushton who then spread the ball out wide. Kyle Sambor delicately floated a cross to the back post where Nathan Sandison smashed home his side’s first.

Within seven minutes it was two as the inform Motor-men continued their incredible recent goal scoring form. An out-swinging corner from the right met Connor Harwood’s nose.

It ight have been an unconventional way to get a shot on target but it was enough to beat Stan Amos and double his side’s lead.

Less than a minute later, Darlaston’s long ball tactic from kick off proved to do more harm than good. It was easily dealt with, launching another counter attack from which Sandison cut back from the left side of the penalty area.

No player could get a touch before an arriving Rushton smashed home.

The home side when into the break with a comfortable 3-0 lead but they refused to rest  as early in the second half Harwood secured his brace thanks to supreme hold up play in the box.

It could’ve been a hat trick had it not been for an earlier goal disallowed but this time there was no question. Some fantastic work to hold off his marker allowed him swivel on the spot to poke home the fourth.

Rushton was the centre piece of the last piece of action of the match, securing an assist for Kyle Sambor.

The pair played a slick one two within the centre of the box, releasing the latter who ran 20 yards unmarked before slipping past Amos to cap off a fantastic result for Danny Holmes’ men.

The result bumps their league position up to second, just three points off table toppers Lower Breck who admittedly have a game in hand.
