Liverpool remain bottom of the WSL after being beaten 3-1 away at Manchester United.

The defeat came on a poignant afternoon, as wreaths were laid in a pre-match tribute at the Progress With Unity Stadium on the 68th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.

Gareth Taylor (pictured) made two changes for Liverpool, as Alejandra Bernabe and Martha Thomas returned to the side.

For the hosts, Marc Skinner replaced the injured Leah Galton with Melvine Malard.

It was a cagey first 45 minutes before a flurry of goals shortly into the second half.

Lisa Naalsund broke the deadlock for United after 52 minutes, firing high into the net after a clever set-up by Jess Park.

Liverpool responded in the 59th minute. After Maya Le Tissier heroically cleared two efforts off the line, before Bergstrom prodded the ball home from close range.

United’s protests for a foul on keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce were ignored, but their frustration lasted barely 60 seconds.

The Reds were caught out from the restart and Julia Zigiotti threaded a pass to Naalsund, who restored United’s lead.

Taylor threw caution to the wind in the closing stages, introducing Beata Olsson and Mia Enderby as Liverpool started to press high up the pitch.

The gamble failed to pay off, when United struck on the counter in the 87th minute.

A slick exchange between Swedish substitutes Ellen Wangerheim and Hanna Lundkvist allowed Rolfo to tap home from close range on her return from injury.

The win moves United up to second in the WSL.

The Reds are back in WSL action on home soil next Sunday (February 8), with Aston Villa the visitors to the St Helens Stadium.
