Harvey Elliott is facing an uncertain future after being left in limbo surrounding his loan spell from Liverpool at Aston Villa.

The 22-year-old joined Villa on a season-long loan in September with the deal including an obligation for the Midlands Club for £35 million once he reaches 10 appearances for the side.

The midfielder is currently sitting on seven appearances but has been absent from the matchday squad on numerous occasions after Villa manager Unai Emery stated Villa will not be fulfilling the obligation

Due to Villa’s injury crisis, Emery has reintegrated Elliott into the matchday squad in the last three matches.

This included playing the full 90 minutes against RB Salzburg in the Europa League on Thursday (29th January) and a cameo against Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday (1st).

This was after Elliott went nearly four months without an appearance for Villa, with his last before Salzburg being a four-minute cameo at Feyenoord on October 2nd.

Elliott went into the season in fine form after winning player of the tournament in last summer’s under-21 European Championships as he and the England under-21’s won their second consecutive Euros by beating Germany 3-2 in extra time.

Elliott recorded five goals in six games in the tournament including the opener in the final, but this season has been far below the youngster’s expectations.

Rumours were rife in January over Liverpool potentially recalling the midfielder after Emery’s brutal admission.

However, there was no recall clause within the conditions of the loan and despite rumours of MLS side Charlotte FC taking over the loan, Elliott stayed put in the Midlands.

With Villa missing the trio of John McGinn, Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara for the long-term, questions remain over whether Emery will have to play Elliott to cover squad depth issues and trigger the obligation within his loan.

His long-term future at Liverpool in uncertain if the obligation is not triggered, with manager Arne Slot seemingly unwilling have recalled Elliott in January.

In recent press conferences, Slot has always underlined Elliott will remain on loan despite the Reds’ recent struggles.

With this, questions will persist on where Elliott will play his football come the start of next season.
