Austrian Bernd Wiesberger beat out England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick by one shot to win the Italian Open.

The win sends Wiesberger to move top of the Race to Dubai standings.

The Austrian went into the final round three shots behind Fitzpatrick but went bogey free in his final round, posting a 65 (-16). The Englishman posted a 69 (-15), including a double bogey on the 9th which ultimately cost him.

It was the Yorkshire man’s fourth second place finish of a frustrating European Tour season so far, who has won an event in every year since 2015 but a 2019 title continues to elude him and time is running out.

England’s Justin Rose and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell finished tied for 15th at -7 for the tournament. Danny Willett finished a shot behind them, tied 18th at -6.

Wiesberger takes home a cool $1,166,660 for his long weekends work. The Italian Open was his 3rd tournament win of the year, having won the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open in July and Made in Denmark in May.
