Merseyside’s athletic clubs began cross country season this weekend, with major events in both Manchester and St Helens.

Wirral AC took winning positions in two categories, with the Manchester Area Cross Country League took place at Wythenshawe Park on Saturday.

Wirral AC competitors Katie Bagley and Sarah Kearney finished first in their individual categories as Helen Smith, part of Vale Royal AC, also won in her classification.

Katie Bagley produced the best time in Senior Women aged 35 to 39, with an impressive time of 33:07.

Sarah Kearney, in the Senior Women aged 45 to 49, took a time of 33:32, as she finished 13th in the overall final standings, with teammate Katie Bagley in 11th place.

Helen Smith got the best time out of the Senior Women aged 45 to 49 category, finishing 41st in the overall standings. Daniel Fegan from Sale Harriers Manchester got the best overall women’s time of 30:22.

Liverpool Harriers & AC competitor Richard Burney was the best male competitor in the Merseyside area, as Richard Burney finished 2nd in the Senior Men aged 40 to 44 classification, with an admirable time of 33:23 leaving himself 14th in the final standings.

Tom Williams and Rob Grantham from Wirral AC finished 28th and 39th respectively. Jay Ferns from Trafford Athletic club got a time of 31:52, leading the men’s final standings.

The next Manchester XC League Cross Country event will take place on the 9th November at Kenworthy Woods.
