Jonny Mellor, 39, of Liverpool Harriers AC has been chosen to represent the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at the 2026 European Championships. 

He is joined by fellow athletes: Mahamed Mahamed (Southampton AC), Philip Sesemann (Leeds City) for the men. 

For the women: Abbie Donnelly (Lincoln Wellington AC), and Natasha Wilson (Micky Morris Racing Team). 

Performance Director Paula Dunn said: “Each athlete selected has demonstrated exceptional form. 

“Their performances over the last year show they can compete with the very best in Europe.’’ 

Mellor who hails from Birkenhead, England is a British long-distance runner.

He represented England in the 2014 and 2022 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the 10,000 metres.

Mellor became the British 10,000 metres champion during the 2015 championships.

He has a marathon personal best of 2:09:06 and was the British Marathon Champion in 2020.

Recently moving into the top ten UK all-time list, he clocked a lifetime best of 2:08:45 in Valencia, finishing 22nd behind Britain’s Alex Yee (7), and Sesemann (13) on the day.

The Athletics Championships will be held at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, from 10-16 August.
