Simone Biles broke the World Championships medals record on the last day of the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart.

The 22-year-old now has 25 World Championship medals, 19 of them gold. Vitaly Scherbo from the ex-Soviet Union owned the record.

Her 24th medal was the gold on the balance beam. She surpassed both Liu Tingting and Li Shijia from China, who placed second and third, respectively.

In the last final of day, the American gymnast from Texas won the gold on the floor exercise with a one-point difference (15.133) from her teammate Sunisa Lee. Angelina Melnikova from Russia won bronze, her third of these championships.

Biles commented on her achievement and her performance: “I feel pretty confident heading into the Olympic year next year. I can’t be more thrilled with the performance at these World Championships and it only gives me confidence moving forward.”

With less than a year to the Tokyo Olympic Games, Biles is the favourite to win multiple medals and possibly to become the first woman to back-to-back all-around titles since Vera Caslavska in 1964 and 1968.
