Tranmere Rovers avenged last season’s defeat to Leicester’s u21 side by defeating them tonight 4-2 to book their place in the last 8 of the Papa John’s Trophy.

On a wet and miserable night on the Wirral, Tranmere made the perfect start in the 4th minute when Morgan Ferrier smashed home after a long ball over the top by Ollie Banks. Tranmere did have chances to make it 2, with both Jay Spearing and Corey Blackett-Taylor having efforts saved by the young Leicester keeper.

The foxes then equalised in the 35th minute when Jake Wakeling was played through on goal and slotted cooly past keeper Joe Murphy. But then straight from the restart, Tranmere went ahead as Danny Lloyd headed home a cross from close range.

Lloyd then got his second of the match on the stroke of half time when he tapped home following a low cross into the box from Ferrier which sent the league 2 side into the half time break 3-1 up.

It was 4 shortly after the break in the 52nd minute when once again Ferrier was the provider as he played through Blackett-Taylor who finished past Jakub Stolarczyk.

Leicester did pull a goal back 3 minutes later when Thanawat Suengchittawon fired home from 30 yards to give them a little bit of hope, but it wasn’t enough as Tranmere prevailed 4-2.

After the match, manager Keith Hill confirmed that another 2 Tranmere players have tested positive for Coronavirus. Speaking on the situation the manager said: ‘The group of players are doing everything that they can in terms of protocol, but we are getting a lot of positive test results’

Tranmere’s next match is on Saturday away to Stevenage
