Tommy Fleetwood squandered a promising start in the Omega Dubai Classic to see his challenge for top spot fizzle out over the weekend.

The Southport born golfer recorded a combined score of +1 in his final two rounds, finishing tied 17th in the European Tour event.

The world number 21 was in 3rd position heading into Saturday but once again failed to challenge eventual winner fellow Englishman Paul Casey.

They both soared in opposite directions on the leaderboard after Fleetwood failed to find enough birdies to challenge for top spot.

The 30 year old is yet to notch a tour win for over 18 months and with Augusta national on the horizon the Merseyside professional will be a long shot for the Masters in April based on current form,
