Southport Ladies RFC are looking to push themselves back up the table after last week’s draw saw them fall.

The side will be looking for the away win to secure some easy points after a series of challenging matches.

Previous Meetings

Southport will be facing Crew and Nantwich away from home with the aim of tightening the gap in the top half of the table. It shouldn’t be a big ask after their first meeting this season was a 70-7 thrashing on the Ports home turf.

This season is the first time the teams have clashed since 2015/16 where Crewe and Nantwich scraped the top of the table over Southport on points difference. Since then both teams have come a long way, but it looks like only one of the sides will retain their position in the Women’s Championship North 2.

Coach and Captain’s Corner

Mark Astwood has been pushing his side after a hard-fought match last Sunday, but is looking for a scoreline on their side this week.

He said: “This week Southport Ladies travel to Crewe and Nantwich Ladies after a good week’s training on top of last week, against second placed Kendal. The girls are looking forward to see further steps in the right direction.”

Captain Laura Walton reiterated this point adding: ”It’s an exciting week for us. We have come off the back of two losses and a draw, so we feel like it’s time to right those wrongs and get a win on the road. The whole squad’s been working hard, focusing on what improvements we can make, to play the best standard of rugby we can put out on game day.”

Southport ones to watch

 Morgan Griffiths

The 20-year-old has proven herself in a range of positions thus far and with her name on the team sheet you know you’ll be in for quality rugby. A thorough knowledge of the game and an ability to hit hard in defence and attack makes her a crucial addition to the Port’s side. Her performances thus far have seen her scoring and acquiring player of the match regularly.

Millie Tavernier

The outside centre has not stopped scoring all season. Powerful and speedy runs have set her as top try scorer for the side so far. With eight already, and one being against this weekend’s side, she’ll be hoping to add to her tally this week.
