The winner of Liverpool Cricket Club’s annual bowls tournament has praised the event for it’s “friendly and welcoming” atmosphere.

Frank Burgana was the professional in the doubles format, playing alongside amateur partner John Topping.

The Liverpudlian was full of praise for the staff and volunteers involved in the running of the tournament and is adamant it couldn’t happen without them.

He said: “It’s an unbelievable day every year. A lot of effort goes on behind the scenes to make this tournament possible each year, with family members and friends volunteering on the day.

“Obviously bowls isn’t the most popular or exciting sport in most people’s eyes, but this tournament allows people to experience the fun and competitive side of the sport.

“It’s great fun competing with people who might not even fully know the rules at the beginning of the day, but by the end they are completely invested in the competition”.

This year’s event brought 32 players together alongside countless family members coming to watch and support across the day.

Refreshments and food were on hand throughout the event, which were provided by the players and supporters.

Frank said: “The staff and volunteers here are amazing. The day couldn’t happen without them and I think it goes under the radar just how much they do.

“Some of them have been doing it for as long as I can remember and everyone appreciates all they do.”

Not everybody went into the tournament knowing everything about bowls, which has been played in Britain since the 13th Century, but the general feeling was positive with everybody having a good time.

Semi-finalist Aidan Whiley added: “I’ve been going to this tournament for a few years now and it’s a fantastic experience every year.

“I’m not generally big into bowls at all but on this day each year I throw myself into it and it’s amazing to be involved with.

“I’d encourage anyone to come down for next year’s events. You’ll definitely enjoy it a lot more than you would expect!”
