Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has signed a new contract until the summer of 2029.

The deal strengthens his position as one of the club’s longest-serving players and emphasizes his importance as Everton look to progress further up the Premier League table.

The 31-year-old was signed by the Toffees from Sunderland for £30m in 2017, a British record for a goalkeeper at the time. He has since made 300 Premier League appearances, keeping 85 clean sheets and has been named Everton player of the season four times.

“I’m over the moon and it gives me the opportunity to build a legacy for myself here, move forward and build this club to where we want to be,” Pickford told EvertonTV.

“Everton is a really special club to me. Coming from Sunderland as a young lad and growing into a man here, it’s been a special time for me and my family.

“I think everyone’s seen the changes and how I’ve developed over time, but I’m still that lad who loves to keep the ball out of the net.”

England’s number one has become a key member of the Everton dressing room and has become a crucial component in helping his side secure Premier League safety for several years.

Last season, Pickford recorded 12 clean sheets and a save percentage of 75% – his best return in five seasons.

He faced 163 shots on target in 38 matches, saving 117 and conceding 44 goals. Data from FBRef shows that he prevented over four goals more than expected, which shows an above-average goalkeeping performance.

There have been criticisms of the Everton goalkeeper, particularly aimed at his concentration in big matches, which have led to errors.

He has also been pulled up on his passing accuracy, with a lacklustre 46% completion rate on his long passes being his most successful return throughout his nine seasons at the club. This stat reflects Everton’s direct style of play as he attempted 966 long passes last season, perhaps indicating this is an area he could improve on.

This new deal for Pickford rewards his commitment to the club over the past nine years. He has established himself as a leading player in his position with his average of 1.16 goals conceded putting him amongst the top five goalkeepers in the Premier League last season, despite facing far more shots than his peers.

Pickford’s deal offers an opportunity to bolster his Everton legacy. Under David Moyes’ second tenure, the club have begun to stabilise and will be aiming to push up the Premier League table. He’ll undoubtedly be remembered for his top-drawer saves, but he’ll be hoping to cement his legacy and help his side push back into Europe for the first time since 2018.

Pickford has remained Everton’s most dependable figure and the numbers show why Everton were so keen to keep him.
