Liverpool Women could be handed a boost if striker Leanne Kiernan rejoins the squad when they travel to Tottenham.

Kiernan has been absent all season due to a foot injury, but manager Gareth Taylor is hoping she will be available to train and travel with his squad ahead of Sunday’s match in the capital.

Liverpool have scored just two goals in the league this season, both coming from Swedish forward Cornelia Kapocs, and are yet to win a game in the WSL.

The team have been limited for striking options, and confirmation that Sophie Roman-Haug will miss the remainder of the season following an ACL injury sustained prior to the international break was yet another blow for Taylor.

But now, the return of Kiernan can provide the Reds boss with another option in attack.

He told Mersey Sport Live: “We’re just still waiting on Leanne, she’s had an issue with her foot and hopefully we can get her available tomorrow (Saturday) for training and then hopefully travel with the squad because we’re a little bit light on numbers.”

Taylor also confirmed that defender Gemma Bonner is expected to miss out on Sunday’s game, whilst Lucy Parry may return to training next week.

They travel to Tottenham to resume their faltering WSL campaign and will aim to finally gain some points in their efforts to climb up the table.

Taylor’s team selection has remained consistent throughout the season despite his side’s struggles at the top of the pitch. He said: “Making too many changes can disrupt the consistency that you’re looking for. We’re not especially flushed with many options at the top end of the pitch and more so in midfield.

“Where we do have more options to change things in the backline because we are quite a bottom-heavy squad as it stands at the moment, so of course I think the January window for us can’t come quick enough.”

Prior to the international break Liverpool had begun to show glimpses of form when they overcame Durham in the League Cup and narrowly missed out on a draw against Manchester City.

Taylor said: “We’re getting closer, we felt that just before the international break. There was some real positive performances against Durham, albeit in a cup game, we still had a job to do there.

“Again, in difficult circumstances where we lost Sophie (Roman-Haug), but the team reacted really well and looked really fit in the last 20 minutes where we overpowered Durham.

“You don’t want an international break at that time, but I think the signs are good.”

Off the pitch, the team have been dealing with the tragic passing of kit man Jonathan Humble, just weeks after they received the news that former manager Matt Beard had also passed away. Taylor praised the team and the club for how they’ve handled these situations.

He said: “I’ve been so proud of the players and their behaviour because for them to go out and try to perform in the manner that they have has been incredible.

“The amount of difficult moments that we’ve had to deal with and contend with so far is something that you’d maybe pack into three years, not two months.”

Tottenham head into this game having scored in all but one of their six WSL games this season and sit comfortably in fourth place in the table.

They come off the back of a 3-0 League Cup victory over Birmingham City, with Danish winger Olivia Holdt proving herself a threat with two goals and one assist in that game.
