Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane can make their mark on the Africa Cup of Nations next month, and they are among a list of greats from the continent to play on Merseyside.

Salah and former teammate Mane has both made a combined 686 appearances for The Reds.

The Egyptian international has made 417 appearances while the Senegalese international made 269.

But Liverpool’s Bruce Grobbelaar has the most appearances for an African player to play for a Merseyside club.

The Zimbabwean goalkeeper made an astonishing 620 appearances in all competitions with the Reds. He also won 18 honours during his time at the club, including 6 league titles and a European Cup.

For the Blues, Joseph Yobo is the African player with the most appearances for Everton, playing 259 times for the Toffees and scored 10 goals during his time at Goodison Park.

The Nigerian most famously became the first African player to captain the club, back in 2007 in a 3-1 win in the UEFA Cup against Greek side Athlitiki Enosi Larissa F.C.

Salah once again is in the top of the list, and claims the top spot with 250 goals for Liverpool in all competitions. His 250th goal came against Aston Villa this season.

Last season’s golden boot winner is ahead of his former teammate Mane in second spot with 120 goals in all competitions.

The two of them would lead their team to glory, winning the 2019/20 Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League in the 2018/19 campaign.

They won four other titles during their time together from 2017 until 2022.

For Everton, Yakubu Ayegbeni scored 33 for the Toffees and next to him is South African midfielder Steven Pienaar who scored 26 goals and was part of David Moyes’ side that reached the 2009 FA Cup final, where they lost 2-1 to Chelsea.

The biggest surprise in the list comes from the now retired Cameroonian defender Joel Matip, who scored 11 goals for Liverpool in all competitions and was also part of the Premier League and Champions League winning side under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool and Everton will both have people set to leave for the AFCON in Morocco which means players like Mohammed Salah, Idrissa Gueye and Illman Ndiaye will all represent their countries at the tournament.
