Tranmere allowed MK Dons to claw back a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2, writes Grace Johnson at Prenton Park.

Charlie Whitaker put the home side ahead in the ninth minute after a through ball from Leicester City loanee Jayden Joseph, who allowed the number seven to curl it into the bottom right corner.

Whitaker doubled the lead just before the 30-minute mark. Down the left this time, the striker chipped Dons’ keeper Graig MacGillivray on the edge of the box – his third goal in his last two games for Tranmere.

MK Dons started strong with their first chance in the third minute when Jonathan Leko and Liam Kelly linked up down the right.

Kelly sent the ball across the box, but captain Alex Gilbey missed the chance to place it into the back of the net.

The visitors favoured the right wing as their window of opportunity but continued to struggle in the final third, as their through balls often ran too long for the front three.

Before the halftime whistle, MK Dons desperately tried to find a chance to close the gap. Joe Tomlinson’s corner reached the box but was quickly cleared by Tranmere’s defence.

Both teams made changes after an hour as the home side brought on Richie Smallwood, Nohan Kenneh and Connor Jennings.

The visitors also made three changes just minutes later with Aaron Collins, Jon Mellish and Gethin Jones coming on.

Omari Patrick gave Tranmere a chance to extend their lead when he countered Kelly’s chance for MK Dons down the left, but his strike went over for a goal kick.

Substitute Mellish got The Dons’ first goal in the 78th minute from a corner which deflected beyond a helpless Joe Murphy.

Shortly after Mellish’s goal, Leko was sent off after receiving a second yellow for a foul on Rovers skipper Nathan Smith.

The equaliser come in the 82nd minute from substitute Kane Thompson-Sommers, which sent Tranmere fans into turmoil.

Both sides piled on the pressure in search of maximum points, but it was a point shared in with MK Dons remaining fourth in League two and Tranmere Rovers staying 16th.
