The Southport half-marathon has returned for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

More than 1,000 runners took part in the race which was was organised by Epic Events.

Rob MacLeod, managing director of Epic, said: “The last time we did it in 2019 we had 2,600 runners.

“That was in summer as well so you do get a bigger attendance but we’d love to build it up over the next couple of years and get it up towards 2,000 hopefully.”

With run clubs taking the younger generation by storm, Stephanie Barney, CEO of Girls on the Go, said: “There has been a huge increase in participation, one of the reasons being that running is a trending topic at the moment.”
