Trent Alexander-Arnold “has turned down the opportunity for a lengthy, improved contract at Liverpool and has made it clear he wants to leave,” according to Sky Sports.

Rumours of the right-back making the swap to the Spanish capital have been circulating for the last year or so.

But these were accelerated by Dani Carvajal’s ACL injury last October.

The 26-year-old reportedly rejected a contract offer worth over £300,000 per week made by Liverpool and instead opted for the lesser wage of around £220,000 per week on a five-year deal offered by Los Blancos.

The Reds’ vice captain now looks set to leave having agreed personal terms with the Champions League holders.

Jamie Carragher made his feelings clear, saying: “As a local lad, you are always treated differently if you leave Anfield.

“If you wanted to break it down to its essential question, you might say: does Trent want to be Steven Gerrard or Steve McManaman.”

Trent would join a list of Liverpool legends who have made the swap to Los Blancos, including Steve McManaman, Michael Owen, Xabi Alonso and Jerzy Dudek, with an honourable mention for Fernando Morientes.

The transfer may not go down well with many fans around the world given his reaction to the rumours back in December with his celebration against West Ham.

Memes are already being made taunting his defensive abilities and discrediting his achievements and contributions to Liverpool.

The transfer now looks all but done as we await confirmation of Trent’s departure.
