Liverpool U21s have endured a difficult start to their Premier League 2 campaign, finding themselves stuck in the bottom half of the table.

Even with flashes of quality and attacking promise, consistency has eluded Rob Page’s young Reds.

Remarkably, Liverpool have never won the Premier League 2 since its inception despite producing many world class players such as Michael Owen and Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, their current form has done little to suggest that record will change soon with the Reds sitting in 18th.

A resounding 4–1 victory over local rivals Everton at the Kirkby Academy was their first win in the league in two months and may prove to be the catalyst Liverpool need to climb the table.

The Merseyside derby win was their most complete performance of the season, with striker Keyrol Figueroa stealing the show. The 18-year-old forward bagged a superb hattrick, showcasing his composure and eye for goal.

His performance underlined why he’s one of the brightest prospects in the academy system. With five goals, Figueroa now sits as the joint second top scorer in the league, and his form will be crucial if Liverpool are to mount any sort of recovery.

However, the young Reds’ problems have stemmed largely from the other end of the pitch. Having conceded 15 goals, they possess the fourth-worst defensive record in the division.

Individual errors and lapses in concentration have repeatedly undermined their attacking efforts, leaving them vulnerable even in games they dominate.

This is a familiar feel for the first team and Arne Slot admitted his side don’t have the depth and you can see this particularly in the defence. So, if Liverpool’s U21 defensive performances improves then a couple could get in the first team squad.

Page and his coaching staff will be encouraged by the spirit shown in the Everton win, but they’ll know that defensive solidity must improve quickly.

If Liverpool can tighten up at the back while continuing to utilise Figueroa’s fire power, their fortunes could change dramatically.

The derby triumph might not erase their struggles, but it could well be the spark that finally ignites Liverpool U21s’ season.
