Thomas Wainwright and James McKenzie both scored two tries to help Wirral RFC Thirds power to a commanding 50-5 victory over Liverpool Collegiate 2XV.

The win sees Wirral RFC go six points clear at the top of the NOWIRUL Northeast Division 4 league.

The first 10 minutes saw most of the ball in the Liverpool Collegiate end but without any final third execution from Wirral.

The breakthrough came in the 16th minute as McKenzie broke free after a loose line out and placed the ball between the posts without any defence in touching distance. The following conversion was comfortably dispatched by Lewis Stevenson.

Against the run of play, Liverpool Collegiate sustained some pressure down the home sides end and Rhys Llewellyn found a gap to earn his team five points. They failed to convert the try to equalise as the ball narrowly missed to the left post.

Only two minutes later, Wirral regained their lead. A tidy line out and slick passing led to a try line scramble where eventually Thomas Wainwright secured the five points. Stevenson knocked away the two points again.

More quick passing proved too much for the Liverpool defence as Gareth Blakemore found space on the right wing to grab the home sides third of the match. The conversion was confidently scored for Stevenson’s third kick of the game.

Wirral took control of the game in the last few minutes of the first half. A hole on the right side of Liverpool’s defensive line was found again.

Danny Jones took advantage and scored his try. From a tight angle, the conversion was dragged narrowly wide of the left post.

The second half started as the first finished with Wirral extending their lead only a minute in. McKenzie grabbed his second as he put the home side 24 points ahead.

In the 53rd minute Stevenson skipped past multiple challenges and laid it off for Wainwright who gets his second. Stevenson repaid the favour as he stepped up and slotted home the kick.

Ten minutes later, Stevenson outmuscled the last line to add another try for the home side. He couldn’t make it a seven pointer as the conversion sailed wide.

In the best move of the game, Pete Corlett added the league leader’s 48th point. After a great passing move in the middle of the park, Kevin Williams had the easy job of placing the ball down. Stevenson slotted away his fifth and final conversion of the game.

Wirral comfortably saw out the rest of the game to win.

Wirral, five points clear at the top, face third place Oldershaw in their next game. Liverpool Collegiate remain 7th and face 14th place Firwood next.
