Scotland qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1998 after a dramatic 4-2 win over Denmark, but was the Liverpool payer leading the way the side’s best ever?

The win put an end to a 26-year absence from the tournament, and sparked debate as to whether captain Andrew Roberts is the best of a select group to play for the Reds and Scotland.

For many fans this will be the first time in their lives that they will see their country play in a World Cup.

Liverpool has historically always had a strong connection with Scotland. Club legends such as Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness have represented both sides.

Robertson is regarded as a modern-day hero for club and country, now he has qualified for his first World Cup, he has a real opportunity to further cement his name as a Scotland legend forever.

Preparing to lead his team in North America next summer, he will be hoping for a successful campaign, aiming to get Scotland out of the group stages for the first time in their history.

Many Liverpool legends who have had successful careers during their time in red have failed to get their country over the first hurdle of the tournament.

Names such as Graeme Souness, Alan Hansen, Gary McAllister and the most iconic of all, Kenny Dalglish all featured in World Cups for Scotland.

The age-old complaint from the Scottish fans is that their big players fail to reproduce their club form on the international stage.

Most notoriously Souness and Hansen were hugely influential for Liverpool but failed to do it for Scotland.

Souness’ commitment to his international duties was always questioned by fans, he admits himself that his dedication to the national team was ‘less than total’ which was influenced by Liverpool at the time as they did not want him risking injury playing friendly games.

The two standouts from these players are Kenny Dalglish and Andy Robertson who both delivered for Scotland when called upon.

King Kenny is currently second for the greatest number of caps at a World Cup for Scotland featuring in three consecutive tournaments (1974, 1978, and 1982), making a total of eight appearances in the finals and 17 in qualifying matches.

He is regarded as one of Liverpool’s’ greatest ever players but will his place at the top of the mantle be replaced by the modern day left-back for the Scottish National team.

Aged 31, Robertsons career is well established. He has collected more than 70 caps so far for Scotland and his is the first name on the team sheet.

His experience and achievements at Liverpool shine through when playing for Scotland and have been vital during their qualifying games.

With Two Premier League titles and a Champions League among his medal collection, he is seen as one of the best full backs in the modern era.

It is unfair to compare these two very different players from different eras, but it is certain that they will go down in history books as two of the greatest Scotland has ever produced.

Comparing Scotland caps while playing for Liverpool, Robertson ranks second and is the only active player in the top 10 list for all time caps received.
