Real Madrid continued their positive start to the season after victory in ‘El Clasico’ between two former Everton managers.

David Alaba opened the scoring in the 32nd minute for Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid as they defended deep in a low block, hitting Ronald Koeman’s team on the break.

After his poor first half performance, Oscar Mingueza was subbed off and was replaced by Coutinho.

And while it did give the hosts a foothold in the game, it did not help them break down Madrid’s backline.

The tension in the Camp Nou increased second half as the frustrations from the crowd become more tangible after missed chances from Fati and Coutinho.

All the missed opportunities came back to bite Barca when Madrid sealed the win thanks to Vasquez.

Criticism of Koeman then became more audible with the home crowd chanting ‘fuera’ towards the Dutchman, calling for his departure.

As for Real Madrid, the victory put them top of La Liga until Real Sociedad’s credible draw at Atletico.

Despite the slip-up for Ancelotti in the Champions League against Sheriff Tiraspol, the Italian will be pleased overall with his start at the club after leaving Everton.
