University of Liverpool’s Men’s and Women’s teams beat Liverpool John Moores University  in a thrilling night of Varsity Volleyball.

It was the opening night of this year’s Varsity, where UoL face John Moores in a number of different sports across a three-day period.

It is the first Varsity competition for three years due to the pandemic.

There was a big turnout for both games, with teams having great support creating a lively atmosphere in the Liverpool Sports Centre.

The Women’s game was first, and it began with the UOL taking the first set comfortably in a 25-13 point win.

They then also won the second set 25-19, leaving them on the verge of victory.

In the last set, LJMU fought back and it looked like they were going to pull themselves back into the game.

However, UOL stayed resilient and managed to come back from a 24-21 point deficit to take the set and get the win, 3 sets to 0.

It was then time for the men’s game, which saw University of Liverpool taken another first set lead, 25-21.

Then the momentum switched, with LJMU brilliantly fighting back and winning the next two sets.

They went into the fourth set looking the favourites to get it done.

John Moore’s looked as if they had kept their cool and were on track for the win, taking a 24-21 lead giving themselves three match points.

Then, in dramatic circumstances, UOL managed to comeback and win the set, leaving the LJMU players dejected after being so close to the win.

This set up an exciting final set, with UOL visibly the more confident of the sides.

Uni of Liverpool comfortably won the last set 15-11, heartbreak for LJMU who came so close.

Overall a brilliant night of Volleyball and great support from students for the event.
