Liverpool have reportedly made Aurelien Tchouameni their top target for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Reports from France and outlets such as The Echo and The Times have confirmed The Reds’ interest in the player – but who is he and how would he fit in at Liverpool?

Tchouameni is a 22-year-old France international midfielder, currently playing for Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

He is a highly sought-after player, with Real Madrid and Chelsea reportedly interested in his signature.

The Bordeaux graduate has been highly regarded as one of the best preforming midfielders in Ligue 1 this season, receiving praise from Paul Pogba and France manager Didier Deschampes.

Tchouameni is widely considered as a defensive midfielder, though shows attributes of being ‘box-to-box’.

Defensively, he successfully tackles and intercepts on average three times a game in order to break down transitions and play.

But he is also an assured ball carrier and progressive passer.

At 6ft 1in, he is favourable in the air and is seen somewhat as an aerial specialist.

Liverpool have been effective from set-pieces this season and Tchouameni could find himself adding to the current mix of aerial threats already at Anfield.

This signing would be welcome to Liverpool’s depth as arguably, a Fabinho back-up is Liverpool’s biggest weakness in terms of rotation.

However, he offers dynamism with his dribbling skills and boasts a confidence and willingness to shoot in the advanced positions we sometimes see Naby Keita and Thiago in.

With the futures of fringe players such as Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain uncertain this summer, this signing could provide even further depth to Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options.

The dynamic prospect has played eight times for France since his international debut in 2021, scoring once for Les Blues.

Tchouameni joined AS Monaco for £16 million in 2020 and is currently valued at around £42 million.

This is similar to the fees we have seen Liverpool pay recently with the signings of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

While reports in France suggest that Liverpool have only made ’initial contact’ with Monaco, expect the links and rumours to develop as the season closes.

With the World Cup taking place in Qatar later this year, Tchouameni may feel a step-up to the Premier League could boost his opportunity in making the France squad.

This is a transfer that makes absolute sense for all parties involved and one in which that would be an exciting addition for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

We approach the point in the season where the rumour mill is at work and transfer rumours become frequent, but Tchouameni is surely in the conversation at Liverpool and would be momentous signing.
