Manchester City ended Liverpool’s 100% record in the Conti Cup group stages with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Filippa Angeldahl and Mary Fowler.

Early Liverpool pressure caused a mishap between City centre-backs Steph Houghton and Alanna Kennedy who almost allowed Yana Daniels a run on goal. The ball ricocheted between the defenders on the edge of the penalty area, playing in Daniels, before goalkeeper Sandy Maclver came out to smother.

Missy Bo Kearns then attempted to curl one into the bottom right corner from outside of the box with Maclver called into action again.

City responded well and created a good chance from a teasing Hayley Raso cross which just glanced past the head of Julie Blackstad coming in at the far post.

The visitors best chance of the half came in the 38th minute as Angeldahl’s long-range attempt whistled above the bar.

Gareth Taylor’s side found the opener 10 minutes into the second half after Kearns was dispossessed in the six-yard box following a poorly defended corner.

The ball fell to Angeldahl wide of the area before the Swedish midfielder’s left-footed strike passed Eartha Cummings into the far bottom corner.

It didn’t take long for the Citizens to double their lead as a well-worked counterattack saw substitute Lauren Hemp find Fowler in the middle of the box with a pinpoint cross.

The versatile forward stretched between two Reds defenders to poke the second home and secure all three points for City.

The result means Liverpool will be hoping for one of the quarter-final spots reserved for the best second-placed teams across the competition with Group B challengers Leicester City left with two matches remaining.
