Presenter Jake Humphrey issued a public apology to Liverpool fans on behalf of BT Sport last night for spreading misinformation during their coverage of the Champions League final last May.
Real Madrid’s 1-0 win in Paris against Liverpool was overshadowed by the awful events that took place outside the stadium.
Liverpool fans were subject to tear gas and pepper spray from French police, and kick-off was delayed for 37 minutes.
Following an independent report, UEFA were found responsible for the incident which nullified false reports that it was Liverpool fans at fault for the incident.
Former footballer and Sky Sports Presenter Gary Neville criticised the coverage by BT Sport, re-tweeting suggestive tweets against his competitor.
In BT Sport’s pre-match show, Humphrey said: “We are hugely regretful that we were reading out those false statements, the only statements shared on the screens inside the stadium. It was a completely false narrative.
“I just want to say sorry to all the people involved in this football club, the stress was added to you because of us sharing that information, which we now know to be completely false.”
