Two first half goals were enough for Southport to hold on to a 2-1 win and secure a league double over promotion chasing Radcliffe to move seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Malakai McKenzie and Dylan Dwyer’s deflected efforts within five minutes of each other in the 34th and 39th minute to give the Sandgrounders a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Anthony Dudley pulled one back for the hosts just after the hour mark but Southport survived Radcliffe pressure to hold on.

It was the fourth meeting between the sides this season, the second at the Neuven Stadium.

Chris Renshaw made a few great saves throughout in the Southport goal, recalled to the squad after George Pickford was recalled to Everton.

Southport are now unbeaten in four heading into Saturday’s FA Trophy Quarter Final at home to Yeovil.

Speaking to the club’s Youtube channel, Southport manager Neil Danns said: “For us to come here today and come away with 3 points, I don’t think I could be more proud.

“The league’s our bread and butter, that’s the most important thing.

“Saturday’s going to be a special occasion. A momentous day for the fans, for the players, for the staff, for the owners, for everyone involved.

“It’s nice to be able to go into that game off the back of a performance like that.”

Midfielder Ted Lavelle said: “We know what Radcliffe are like. We’ve played them a number of times this season so we knew what we needed to do.

“Once their goal went in they had quite a lot of momentum. But obviously we nullified it and got the three points.”

The win moves Southport up to 17th place in the National League North.
