Tranmere Rovers’ EFL Trophy win over Blackpool was subject to pre-match confusion following a heavy period of rain and a number of pitch inspections, writes Elliott Newby at Prenton Park.

The home side eventually ran out as 2-1 victors in a game that almost never happened.

As both teams were warming up in the pouring rain, the match officials could be seen wandering the perimeter of the pitch in discussion, presumably observing the state of the ever-worsening playing field.

The original kick-off time was delayed until after a pitch inspection at 19:15, when referee, Declan Brown appeared to signal that the game was to be called off; news that was received by a chorus of boos and jeers.

However, as fans were starting to filter out the turnstiles and the Blackpool players came out to show their appreciation to their travelling fans on what was thought to be a wasted trip, an announcement was made over the Tannoy encouraging fans to stay in their seats ahead of yet another pitch inspection at 19:30.

This one proved more positive and the game eventually kicked off at 20:00, an hour later than planned.

Blackpool struck first after an incredibly impressive solo effort from St. Pauli loanee Scott Banks, dancing around three Tranmere defenders before bending his effort into the top left corner.

It only took the home side six minutes to find the equaliser however, as the ball fell to Patrick Brough on the edge of the box who watched as his effort took a rather fortuitous deflection and rolled past a helpless Franco Ravizzoli.

After a rather low-key period following the half time interval, Tranmere took the lead in the 75th minute as a delightful Omari Patrick cross was met by the head of Joe Ironside that saw two of Andy Crosby’s substitutions combining.

Blackpool ended the game with a period of heavy pressure, but the Tranmere defence remained resolute and were able to see out the one goal advantage almost three hours after the original kick-off time.

Both teams had come into this clash having already qualified for the Round of 32, but the result means Tranmere will now have a home tie, whereas Blackpool will have to play their knockout game away from home.

Crosby’s side will discover their next opponent on Thursday, two days before returning to Prenton Park once again for a League Two fixture against Cheltenham Town.
