Lower Breck FC remain top of the Northern Premier League Division One West after a fiercely fought 1–1 draw against Clitheroe FC, writes Jake Reed at the Anfield Sports and Community Centre.
It was Breck’s third consecutive league draw in a match that could have allowed them to widen the gap at the top.
Clitheroe struck early through Luke Gill just five minutes in. A pinpoint through ball from Veron Parny sent the forward clean through, and he stayed composed to slot past goalkeeper Theo Roberts.
The visitors controlled the opening 20 minutes, moving the ball confidently while Breck struggled to settle. Misplaced passes and rising frustration summed up their slow start.
Gary Moore’s side soon grew into the game. Their press forced Clitheroe to make numerous sloppy mistakes at the back, and the hosts finally worked their first real opportunity. A fumble in Clitheroe’s box forced goalkeeper Zac Hadi to make a brilliant double save to ensure his side kept the lead.
From that point on, the half belonged to Breck. Elliot Hughes repeatedly threatened down the left, taking on defenders and creating opportunities. Despite the mounting pressure, more good stops from Hadi helped Clitheroe hold on going into halftime.

Clitheroe would again start the half brightly with midfielder Danny Wilkins hammering a shot from range just wide. Yet, much like the first half, Breck soon grew back into the match.
Tensions rose when a high boot from Hughes caught Clitheroe’s Brad Ditch in the chest, earning him a yellow card. The defender struggled on but was eventually forced off in the 69th minute.
Breck continued to maintain steady pressure, though Clitheroe’s compact backline kept them ahead as the minutes ticked away.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 82nd minute. A loose ball rolled out for Dan Lowey to drill a low driven shot straight into the bottom corner to level the score.

Things went from bad to worse for Clitheroe after manager Sean McConville was sent off due to protesting a decision in the build up to Breck’s goal.
The home side continued to push for a winner, but it was all too late with Clitheroe holding firm to protect their point.
Lower Breck now turn their attention to Tuesday’s short trip to the APEC Taxis Stadium to face Runcorn Linnets, where they will look to return to winning ways and strengthen their position at the top in their first season since promotion.
