The final day of the EFL League Two season kicks off at 3pm on Saturday and Tranmere will finally learn if their dismal form in 2026 will be punished with relegation to the National League.
Rovers sit in 20th, one point above Harrogate Town who currently occupy the second relegation slot in 23rd.
Just 11 points this calendar year has seen Tranmere plummet to the bottom end of the table.
Manager Andy Crosby was sacked in March following 10 defeats in 11 games, but the appointment of Pete Wild has been unable to turn fortunes around.
It is Tranmere’s eighth successive season in the EFL, following promotion from the National League in 2018.
The final challenge this season facing Tranmere is a match-up against play-off side Grimsby Town at Prenton Park.
Most supporters would have been wishing for an easier ride on what will be a tense afternoon, such is the tough nature of the EFL.
How have they got here?
The first few months of the season had Tranmere in mid-table by December, but it could be argued they are fortunate to have safety in their hands after their 2026 form.
Last week’s away win at Cheltenham broke a run of 12 games without a win, going back to a 2-0 win against Crawley, which itself was a first win after six defeats.
‘The worst it’s been for five years!’- What is going wrong at Tranmere Rovers?
Crosby was sacked after a 3-1 defeat at Newport County in March, 10 months after he was appointed on a permanent basis.
There was slight promise in Wild’s first game in charge as Tranmere held off Fleetwood to earn a point, but points have not been flowing since.
It’s been five points from nine games for Wild so far, but he likely would’ve taken Tranmere’s safety being in their own hands going into the final day.
The task ahead
The message from Wild will be simple, to win on Saturday will see them safe regardless of results elsewhere.
Their last fixture, a 3-0 defeat away at now promoted MK Dons, was always going to be an extremely tough afternoon.
Their game prior though, a 3-1 away win at Cheltenham, will give confidence to Tranmere’s players and supporters that they have enough to iron out a result.

A win would be enough, anything else puts it in doubt.
Barrow, who are bottom, cannot catch Tranmere.
But Harrogate Town, Crawley Town and Newport could catch them with the right results.
Newport travel to Barrow, whereas Harrogate and Crawley have home fixtures against Barnet and Salford respectively.
For Tranmere to be relegated, all three of those sides would need to better to Tranmere’s result.
A Crawley or Harrogate defeat would mean Tranmere are safe regardless of events at Prenton Park.
A Newport defeat would also almost guarantee survival, barring remarkable results to swing the goal difference.
Tranmere supporters will hope an early goal calms Prenton Park down, because it’s going to be a stressful day for everyone associated with the football club.
